Postby Chris Golding » Tue Nov 18, 2025 5:12 pm

HI THERE,
HAS ANYONE IN AUSTRALIA AQUIRED OR MANUFACTURED THE ESCO TEST FIXTURE 91-68 AND SPANNER, LEAD IN TOOL 91-130, INTERNAL PLUG INSERTION TOOL 91-31, FILLER PLUGS 91-132. (OR ANY OTHER JIGS AND TOOLS NEEDED)
AFTER READING THE LANCAIR ESCO STRUT REBUILDING DOCUMENT 011-0005, I AM WEIGHING UP THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO GET ONE ESCO NLG STRUT FOR A 320 REBUILT. IF THE TOOLING OR DRAWINGS FOR TOOLS ARE READILY AVAILABLE I WILL REBUILD IN MY CAR30 MAINTENANCE FACILITY IN HERVEY BAY, QUEENSLAND.
FAILING THE TOOLING OR DRAWINGS BEING READILY AVAILABLE, WHO IS EVERYONE SENDING THEM TOO FOR REPAIRS IN THE STATES? ARE THERE NEW STRUTS AVAILABLE AT A COMPETATIVE PRICE, BEARING IN MIND THAT I'D BE PAYING DOUBLE FOR FREIGHT IF REBUILDING.
THANKS GUYS.

Chris, I believe most people have created their own tools for disassembling and repair. There are a lot of photos in the archives of struts being taken apart and repaired. If you need seals, I have those in bulk also and there are pictures available of the parts from LancairTalk. If you decide to make your facility available for strut repairs let me know and we can set aside some space for that information.

Paul,
I’m not sure this helps our Australian friends, but it is my understanding is that Chris Zavatson has been doing a large number of ESCO strut rebuilds in recent years. He doesn’t just swap out seals, but brings every strut up to the latest internal configuration and damping performance. He is familiar with all the design iterations the damping mechanism went through early on. He even has supply chains set up for replacement parts.
My take-away in talking with him about my strut is that there is a lot more to strut overhauls than just replacing the seals. I am sending him my Legacy strut not just for an overhaul, but also to have its damping improved.

there are tools on the website that people have made. If you spend some search time on strut overhaul and repair you will find a number of owners who completely disassembled and made tools to do the job. Once you get the parts visible you could show them here and we might be able to help without sending the strut to the states. For seals, I supplied Chris with most of the Legacy nose seals in bulk so he has them or I can send some.
